DOCOMOMO Japan has added Kurayoshi City Hall to its list, “226 Buildings of Modern Movement in Japan”

DOCOMOMO Japan has added Kurayoshi City Hall to its list, “226 Buildings of Modern Movement in Japan”, (DOCOMOMO = Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Neighborhoods of the Modern Movement).
Kurayoshi City Hall is the 8th building designed by Kenzo Tange to be included. The other 7 Tange projects that are listed include Hiroshima Peace Center (Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum and Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park), Kagawa Prefectural Government Office, Yoyogi National Gymnasium, Tosho Printing Company Haramachi Factory, St. Mary’s Cathedral, Tokyo, Yamanashi Press and Broadcasting Center and Imabari City Hall Complex.
Kurayoshi City Hall was added for the evaluation of the following points: 1. Its design fits the natural features and climate of the area; 2. It is a pioneering example of architecture, which realized a universal character that can be seen in governmental buildings of the day, such as civic halls (public space); 3. It has been highly evaluated as a full-fledged governmental building in the earliest stage of the postwar period in Japan; and 4. The original form is essentially kept in good condition.
DOCOMOMO International is a non-profit organization, which has initiated an on-going worldwide movement to list and document outstanding examples of modern architecture in order to help preserve and pass the heritage of these works to future generations. The Japan branch, DOCOMOMO Japan, lists representative buildings for Modern Movement in Japan in cooperation with the Architectural Institute of Japan. They also identify those buildings of historical and cultural value and carry out proposals for preservation and reutilization. The number of buildings on the list has reached 226, with 10 buildings, including Kurayoshi City Hall, newly added this year.

この度、倉吉市庁舎がDOCOMOMO Japan（DOCOMOMO = Documentation and Conservation of buildings, sites and neighborhoods of the Modern Movementの略称）による「日本におけるモダン・ムーブメントの建築226選」に新規選定されました。
倉吉市庁舎のリスト入りは、広島ピースセンター（広島平和記念資料館および平和記念公園）、香川県庁舎、国立屋内総合競技場（国立代々木競技場）、図書印刷株式会社原町工場（図書印刷沼津工場）、東京カテドラル聖マリア大聖堂、山梨文化会館、今治市庁舎・公会堂・市民会館（今治市庁舎本館・公民館・市民会館）に続く、丹下健三作品として8作目となります。
倉吉市庁舎は、比較的降雪の多い気候・風土という地域性に適応する設計である点、市民ホール（パブリックスペース）の導入などの今日の庁舎建築にも通じる普遍的性格を実現した先駆的な事例である点、戦後日本における最初期の本格的な庁舎建築として高い評価を得てきた点や建物内外に創建当初の佇まいが概ね良好に守られている点等が評価され、今回の選定に至りました。
DOCOMOMOは、モダン・ムーブメント（近代運動）の推進に寄与した建築の歴史的、文化的重要性を訴え、その記録と現存建物の保存に関する活動を行う国際的学術組織です。その日本支部であるDOCOMOMO Japanは、「日本におけるモダン・ムーブメントの建築」の代表的作品を日本建築学会とともに選定し、それらの歴史的・文化的価値を同定し、保存・再活用のための提案などを行っています。これまでに216件がリストに選定されており、2018年度は倉吉市庁舎を含む10件が新たにリストに加わりました。
