Our story began in 1946, when my father, Kenzo Tange, founded the Tange Laboratory.

I joined Kenzo Tange Associates in 1985 and worked directly under my father until he passed away in 2005. He instilled in me that architecture is never isolated—it must be envisioned from an urban perspective, created for the people who use it, and carried out with a strong sense of social responsibility.

In 2002, we took a bold step forward, renaming the company Tange Associates. On November 11, 2024, embracing the diversity of a rapidly changing world, we evolved once again. We renamed our practice in Japanese to TANGE Kenchiku Toshi Sekkei. Although our English name TANGE ASSOCIATES remains unchanged, this step reflects our commitment to exploring innovative design directions, thinking across three interconnected scales—city, architecture, and people—while honoring the history and values that built our reputation.

This rebranding embodies our conviction: TANGE is not one individual. TANGE is all of us. We are TANGE: every team member carries this pride and purpose as we move toward the future.

Society and our environment is rapidly and constantly changing and so the needs of our clients and broader society are becoming more diverse. We believe in close collaboration and meaningful dialogue with our clients, ensuring we deeply understand their vision. Through thoughtful proposals and innovative solutions, we aim to deliver more than expected—architecture that surprises, delights and has a lasting value.

Across my forty years in practice, I’ve learned that there are no true boundaries: no borders between nations, no rigid divisions in building types and use. What matters most is to design spaces that are welcoming and feel comfortable to the people who gather there. That, I believe, is the true essence of architecture.

As Chairman and CEO of TANGE ASSOCIATES, I will continue to devote myself fully to the growth of our organization. At the same time, I remain a hands-on leader, actively involved in every project alongside our team. Together, we ensure that every design reflects our ethos: architecture that genuinely belongs in its place. Always reaching beyond expectations, we strive to create buildings and environments that inspire and enrich both people and society.

弊社は、1946年、父、丹下健三により丹下研究室として、創業しました。
その後、1985年、私が丹下健三・都市・建築研究所（旧丹下研究室）に入社しました。
父が他界する、2005年まで父の下で建築とは単独で成立するもののではなく、都市的な視点から考え、またそこに集う人々のためであるべきという事、また、建築には社会的責任があるという事を、学びました。

2002年に社名を丹下都市建築設計へと、変更し新たな一歩を踏み出しました。
そして2024年11月11日に、世界的に多様化する社会に対応すべく、多様なデザインの方向性を模索し、都市・建築・人という三つのスケールで考え、私達のもつ歴史を大切に、その上に立って都市設計を行うという強い思いで、TANGE建築都市設計へと、社名を変更しました。

そして、その思いは、私一人が丹下（I am TANGE）ではなく、全てのスタッフが、“We are TANGE.”であるという事、TANGEとしての誇りを持って、未来に向けて出発することでした。

社会、環境はどんどん変化しています。
それに伴い、クライアントや社会のニーズも、多様化してきています。
私どもは、クライアントに寄り添い対話を大切にし、様々な提案を通して、クライアントの想いを明確に受け止めて、クライアントの想像以上の答え、喜びをお届けします。

私の40年の建築人生の中で、国と国との国境はなく、又、建物の用途の境もありません。
その建築を使うそこに集う人々にとって、心地良いと感じてもえる設計が私が信ずる建築のあるべき姿だと考えます。
私はTANGEの代表／CEOとして、引続き組織の発展に全力で立ち向かい、同時に私自身も現役のプロジェクトリーダーとして、全てのプロジェクトに携わり、スタッフと共に“そこにあるべき建築を”そして、いつまでも皆様のイメージを超え続ける建築設計、社会設計を生み出す建築家でありたいと思っております。

These are just a few of the voices responding to TANGE’s recent international projects. For decades, we have brought fresh value to communities around the globe, delivering architecture that resonates with culture and lifestyle.
Now, I want to bring this global perspective back to Japan. The experience and expertise that we have cultivated abroad allows us to see familiar landscapes in a new light. This reverse import of ideas is a uniquely TANGE approach—an unconventional way of thinking that only TANGE ASSOCIATES can achieve.
From early on, we focused on linking city and architecture. Our goal for every project is not only to satisfy clients but also to create places that inspire pride and affection in the people of the city.
We had the privilege of working on an urban planning project in Italy to revitalize Bologna’s Fiera district. A local student, who had been away from his hometown for some time, returned to see the transformed city and said with emotion, “I feel like I’ve truly come home to Bologna.”
This project was a testament to the power of design that honors tradition—protecting the region’s heritage, culture, and landscape, while introducing architecture that brings new value. By balancing innovation with harmony, we were able to highlight and enhance the history and culture that had long defined the place.
It is this kind of experience—breathing new life into environments without diminishing their soul—that I am passionate about creating here at home as well.

近年海外において、TANGEの建築に寄せられた評価の一部です。私どもは世界の様々な国で、そこに暮らす人に新たな価値を持った建築を提案し続けてきました。私はいま、世界中で学び築いてきた実績とノウハウを日本国内に逆輸入しようと考えています。これもTANGEならではのTANGEにしかできない常識を超えたアプローチかもしれません。私どもはいち早く、都市と建築を結びつけることに着目しました。プロジェクトのゴールは、クライアントはもとよりその街の人に愛着や誇りを抱いてもらうことです。かつてイタリアのボローニャにあるフィエラ地区の都市計画プロジェクトを担当したことがあります。ボローニャで生まれたものの、その後間故郷を離れていた一人の学生が生まれ変わった街を見て、「私はいま、ボローニャに帰ってきた」と言ったそうです。その土地の伝統や文化、景観を守り、調和を大切にしながら、新たな価値を持った建築を提案することで、その土地が守ってきた歴史や文化を損なうことなく、それらをより一層際立たせることに成功した一例です。このような体験を国内でもたくさん創り上げてまいりたいと強く思っています。
