I am responsible for TANGE’s interior design work. The projects I work on are mostly stand-alone interior design assignments rather than projects attached to architectural commissions. In some cases, clients approach us specifically because they want designs that their usual partners cannot deliver. In such unique situations, my focus is on finding “answers that clients cannot imagine.”

To reach results beyond expectations, I first ensure that I am not perceived as “uninformed.” For example, when designing a VIP salon, if clients think I do not understand what it means to serve VIPs, trust is lost immediately. That is why I always work closely with Chairman/CEO Paul Tange. His extensive global network and deep knowledge of spaces and human interaction from an international perspective are invaluable. Through working with him, I make a conscious effort to absorb his experience and insights, and strive to continuously deepen my knowledge so that I can earn the kind of recognition where clients say, “If it’s Ishida, he would know.”

TANGEのインテリアデザイン業務を受け持っています。私が行うプロジェクトは、建築プロジェクトをTANGEが受注する際に付随するものではなく、インテリアデザイン単体の仕事がほとんどです。これまで付き合ってきた既知の会社にできないデザインを、とオファーを受けることもあります。そんな特殊な状況のもとで、私は「クライアントが想像できない答え」を見つけることにこだわっています。想像以上の答えにたどり着くために、まず「知らない」と思われないようにしています。たとえばVIP向けのサロンの場合。この人はVIPのことがわかっていないと思われたら、そこで信頼が失墜してしまいます。私はいつも丹下憲孝代表とチームを組みながらプロジェクトにあたっています。代表は国内・海外のVIPの知り合いも多く、グローバルな視点から見た空間、人との関わり方の造詣が深い。一緒に打ち合わせをすることで、代表の経験と知識を自分のものにするよう心がけています。「石田さんだったら知っている」そんな評価を得られるよう日頃から知識を高める努力を続けています。

Many of our clients come to us with requests such as, “We want something truly special that can only be found here.” These one-of-a-kind orders are what we often receive, and we are constantly striving to take on something new. To do so, we not only make every effort to gather the latest information and refine our sensibilities, but also to build strong, trusting relationships with external collaborators. It is essential to have a network of professional teams with diverse expertise—so that we can always assemble the right team for each project. And for that to happen, I myself must remain someone others find appealing to work with.

I keep reminding myself of the phrase: “If the idea is original, the design must be original too.” Drawing on Chairman/CEO Paul Tange’s perspective to spark inspiration, we expand our imagination and evolve them into unique ideas. To truly understand our clients’ visions, we embrace knowledge and sensibilities that transcend borders. This continuous pursuit is what brings clients satisfaction and encourages them to return to us for new projects. Through continuous challenges, staying close to clients, and embodying the spirit of TANGE, I believe we can strengthen the trust of external collaborators and grow into an organization ready to take on new challenges with full commitment.

「ここにしかない特別なものを作ってほしい」。そういったオンリーワンのオーダーが多いです。常に新しいものにトライしている感じです。できるだけ最新の情報を収集し、感性を磨き続けることはもちろん、外部スタッフと良好な人間関係を築くようにしています。この案件にはこのチームが向いている、そんなプロフェッショナルな技量をもったチームをたくさん抱えておくことも大切なこと。そのためには、自分自身が魅力的だと思われるようにしないと。「考えがオリジナルなら、デザインもオリジナル」、この言葉を忘れないようにしています。丹下代表の話をもとに想像力を膨らませ、独自のアイデアに進化させます。クライアントの想いを正確に理解するため、国境を超えた知恵や感性を身につける。そんな取り組みを続けることが、クライアントに喜んでいただき、プロジェクトをリピートしていただける条件なのだと思っています。常に挑戦を続け、クライアントに寄り添い、TANGEらしさを体現していくことで、外部スタッフからの信頼もさらに強固なものになり、また新しい課題に全力で当たることができる組織になっていくと考えています。
