As Vice Chairman, I support Chairman/CEO Paul Tange through communication across a variety of situations and levels, while also managing overseas project teams. As Chief Creative Advisor, I focus on raising the overall design quality of the organization. We live in a world where both social and natural environments are constantly changing, and values and needs are diversifying. In such an environment, I believe the most important quality is the ability to respond flexibly to circumstances. Each project has its own conditions and context, and it is increasingly vital to carefully interpret them while seeking the best possible solution.

To achieve this, I emphasize the importance of idea-sharing within each team. By understanding one another’s thinking and exchanging opinions, new discoveries emerge and individual potential expands—leading directly to better design quality. Left unchecked, design can easily become self-centered. But exposure to diverse perspectives sharpens flexibility and strengthens our ability to adapt. Harnessing the advantage of having a diverse team allows us to update proposals quickly, while also creating opportunities and motivation for younger staff. I see this as a system that benefits not only the organization and its projects, but also our clients.

副会長として様々な状況、レベルでコミュニケーションを取りながら丹下憲孝代表をサポート、並びに海外プロジェクトチームのマネジメントを行っています。また「チーフクリエイティブアドナイザー」として、組織全体のデザインクオリティ向上を図っています。私たちを取り巻く社会環境・自然環境は常に変化し、価値観やニーズも多様化しています。そのような中、私が重視するのは「状況に応じて柔軟に対応する力」です。プロジェクトごとに異なる条件や文脈を丁寧に読み取り、最適解を模索する姿勢がより求められるようになると考えます。そのために私は、それぞれのチーム内でアイデアを出し合うことの意義を説き、それを推進しています。自分以外のスタッフの考え方を知り意見を交わすことで新たな発見が生まれ個々の可能性を広げることができ、デザインクオリティの向上につながると思っています。ともすればデザインは独りよがりになりがちです。いろんな発想と出会うことで頭が柔軟になり、状況に応じて対応する力が増すのです。多様なスタッフが所属する優位性を活かせば、提案のアップデートが迅速にでき、同時に若いスタッフにもチャンスとやりがいが生まれます。組織にとって、プロジェクトにとって、そしてクライアントにとってもメリットの多い仕組みだと思っています。

Creating architecture that earns recognition on the world stage—this, in turn, draws interest from people here in Japan. I want to continue sustaining this positive cycle by focusing on three key approaches:

1. Creative Vision – not just defining functions and spaces, but developing concepts that respond to society and the times.
2. Urban Perspective – looking beyond the site itself to the surrounding environment, the city as a whole, and even future urban visions.
3. Fusion of Tradition and Modernity – integrating old and new, transforming contrasting elements into a unified design philosophy.

This attitude of embracing difficult challenges is what gives us originality and strength in the international arena. Architecture is not merely a container—it should bring vitality, inspiration, and intellectual stimulation to society and to the people who use it.
At TANGE, we live by the belief that “architecture is a lifelong study.” With this mindset, I strive to grow each day, to continue learning, and to help create architecture that will be valued around the world. My role is to ensure that TANGE remains an organization capable of doing so for generations to come.

世界で評価される建築をつくる。それを知った国内の方々が私どもに興味を持ってくださる。その好循環をこれからも持続していくために、次の3つの考え方を大切にしていきたいと思っています。1つめは「創造的構想力」。これは機能や空間のあり方を超え、社会や時代に対応する発想力を意味しています。2つめは「都市からの発想」。敷地だけにとどまらず、その周辺環境や都市全体を俯瞰し、時には未来像までも見据えて構想を練るという姿勢を指します。3つめは「伝統と現代の融合」です。旧と新、相反する要素を統一されたデザイン理念として昇華させる。この困難に挑む姿勢こそが、国際舞台において独自性・特徴を生む、他にはない私どもの強みです。建築は単なる器ではありません。社会や利用する人々に対して活力や感動、知的な刺激をもたらす存在であるべきです。TANGEを貫く「建築は一生の勉強」という言葉を大切にしながら日々を過ごし、昨日より今日、と成長を果たしていきたい。これからもまだまだ勉強を続け、世界で評価される建築をつくり続けていく、またそれができる組織であり続けるため、必要な役割を果たしてまいります。
