Through my career, I have primarily been engaged in projects overseas, while also taking part in various projects led by international clients within Japan. I was born and raised in Germany, educated in the United States, and now being based in Tokyo, I have had the great opportunity to work closely with our Chairman/CEO Paul Tange on planning and architecture projects in East Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the United States, Working across diverse regions, I have learned that understanding differences in culture and history fosters mutual understanding between the people we engage with in a project—and ultimately leads to the creation of better architecture.

To apply and embody this lesson, we at TANGE make it a point in our daily practice to remain free of prejudice, to value continuous learning, to sharpen our curiosity, to keep our eyes open and absorb widely, and to listen with respect to perspectives different from our own. Currently, as a team leader, I am responsible not only for design work but also for interacting closely and frequently with clients. Just as with design, I consider it essential to study the local culture and history, so that we can cultivate genuine mutual understanding with all the stakeholders of a project. And therefore, working with people of different cultures and temperaments around the world, no two days are ever the same. Each day is highly stimulating and rewarding.

これまで、主に海外におけるプロジェクトに従事してきました。同時に海外のクライアントが日本国内で行うプロジェクトにも多く参画してまいりました。私はドイツで生まれ育ち、アメリカで学び、現在は東京を拠点としています。そして、東アジア、中東、ヨーロッパ、アメリカにおける企画・建築プロジェクトで、丹下憲孝代表と密接に仕事をする機会に恵まれてきました。多様な地域での業務を通じて、文化や歴史の違いを理解することが、プロジェクトに関わる人々との相互理解を深め、最終的にはより優れた建築を生み出すことにつながると学びました。この学びを活かし実践するために、私たちTANGEでは日々の業務の中で、偏見を持たないこと、学び続ける姿勢を大切にすること、好奇心を磨くこと、広く視野を持ち多くを吸収すること、そして自分とは異なる視点に耳を傾け敬意を払うことを心がけています。現在、チームリーダーとして、設計業務だけでなく、クライアントとの緊密かつ頻繁なやり取りにも責任を持っています。設計と同様に、その土地の文化や歴史を学ぶことは、プロジェクトに関わるすべてのステークホルダーとの真の相互理解を築くために不可欠だと考えています。だからこそ、世界中の異なる文化や気質を持つ人々と仕事をする中で、同じ日は一日としてありません。毎日が非常に刺激的で、やりがいに満ちています。

Architecture is regarded as one of the oldest professions, with origins tracing back more than 3,000 years. Throughout history it has undergone countless evolutions, yet one principle has never changed: architecture is created for people. I believe it is the role of an architect to design spaces that are practical, comfortable, and enriching to human life.

Although TANGE has been entrusted with numerous large-scale projects, the studio retains an atmosphere that is intimate and almost atelier-like. This is a new identity shaped by Chairman/CEO Paul Tange, firmly rooted in tradition yet projecting toward the future. TANGE offers a work environment where one can wholeheartedly embrace challenges for the future of architecture — an environment defined by a unique sense of comfort. Within this setting, I see my role as a guide: to pass on the value and fascination of working in architecture to the next generation, to share with them the essence of “TANGE style,” and to dedicate myself together with my team to realizing projects that embody it to the fullest.

建築は3,000年前に生まれた最古の職業のひとつと呼ばれています。太古からの歴史の中で様々な進化を遂げてきたわけですが、まったく変わっていないことがあります。それが「人のためにつくる」ということです。人にとっての使いやすさ、心地よさを生むのが建築家の役割だと考えます。TANGEは数多くの大規模プロジェクトを手掛けてきたにもかかわらず、スタジオには親密で、まるでアトリエのような雰囲気が保たれています。これは、伝統に深く根ざしながら未来を見据えるという、丹下憲孝代表が形づくった新たなアイデンティティです。TANGEでは、建築の未来に向けて心から挑戦できる、そして独自の心地よさに満ちた環境が整っています。そのような環境の中で、私は自らを“案内役”と捉えています。すなわち、建築に携わることの価値や魅力を次世代に伝え、「TANGEらしさ」の本質を共有し、それを最大限に体現したプロジェクトを、チームとともに実現することに力を注いでいます。
