In my forties, I was responsible for renovation and renewal of some of TANGE’s landmark architectural works. For me, renovation is not simply about restoring a building to its original form, but about re-shaping it so that it can continue to live on into the future.

Since entering my fifties, my role has shifted from design toward more business-related work. Currently, I am involved in planning and development on a daily basis —this is an external process and the stage that comes before design. At this stage, it is not enough to understand only the surface-level needs expressed by clients. I aim to engage in high-quality dialogue that uncovers the deeper intentions behind those requests. By considering the client’s surrounding environment and social changes, interpreting these hidden intentions, and sharing them effectively within our team, we at TANGE can develop optimal solutions. I believe that building this process is my mission.

40代にはTANGEを代表する建築の改修ならびにリニューアルを担当してきました。改修工事では単に元の形に戻すのではなく、これからも生き続ける建築として整備することを重視してきました。50代に入ってからは、設計から営業的な業務へシフトしてきました。現在は、企画・開発の仕事に日々携わっています。これは設計の前段階にある対外的なもの。クライアントが示す表面的なニーズを理解するだけなく、その内側にある真意まで掘り下げるために、質の高い対話を心がけています。クライアントにとっての周辺環境、社会情勢の変化などに配慮し、クライアントとの対話によって得た隠れた真意を読み解き、それをしっかりと社内共有することでTANGEによる最適解を生み出します。そのプロセスを構築することが、私の使命だと考えています。

When I think about TANGE’s identity and our uniqueness and strengths, I believe they lie in our approach to architecture within the context of the relationships between “city and architecture” and “architecture and people.” There is a saying that “the environment shapes people.” Architecture is the environment—it influences human sensitivity, behavior, and ultimately, quality of life. That is why architecture must be deeply connected to human richness and sensibility. I hope for TANGE to be an organization that creates new cultural values and shapes new ways of living through each and every project.

As we move into a digital society shaped by IT technologies such as AI, virtual spaces and environments will become increasingly present in our lives. In such a context, the real “physicality” of human experience—design rooted in practice, perception, and learning—will become even more vital. At TANGE, we will continue to place value on human connections, while creating and promoting architecture that brings forward-looking, unprecedented value to society.

私どもの独自性、他にはない強みを考えた時、「都市と建築」「建築と人間」という関係性の中で建築を考えていくことにTANGEらしさがあるように思います。「環境がひとをつくる」という言葉があります。私は、建築は環境そのものであり、人の感性や行動に影響を与える大切な要素であると考えます。だからこそ建築は人間の感性や豊かさへ結びつくものである必要があります。一つひとつのプロジェクトを通して新たな生活や文化のあり方を生み出していく、そんな組織でありたいと願っています。AIに代表されるIT技術によってもたらされるこれからのデジタル社会は、バージチャルな空間・環境が身近に出現する時代。そこでは、人間のリアルな「身体性」、つまり実践・知覚・学習に基づいた建築づくりがより重要になってくるでしょう。私どもTANGEは「ひととひととの結びつき」を大切しながら、これからも一歩先を見つめた、これまでにない価値をもつ建築を発信してまいります。
